Regional Manufacturing Solutions for Health Security: Key Insights from EARGHSS 2025

On the second day of the East Africa Regional Global Health Security Summit (EARGHSS) 2025, a breakout session focused on the critical role of regional manufacturing in enhancing health security across the continent. Moderated by Dr. Sam Nyingi of the Africa Resource Center, the panel brought together experts to discuss how local production of medical supplies, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals can reduce dependency on global supply chains, improve access to essential health products, and strengthen resilience against future health crises.

Dr. Cecilia Wanjala, Acting CEO of Biovax, emphasized the need for investment in local vaccine manufacturing capabilities, highlighting the success of recent initiatives in Kenya.

Dr. Bernard Olayo of the World Bank underscored the importance of public-private partnerships and financing mechanisms to scale up regional manufacturing infrastructure, while Brian Kavuya, MD of East Africa Medical Vitals, shared practical insights on overcoming logistical and regulatory challenges.

The discussion also explored innovative approaches to sustaining regional manufacturing ecosystems. Roneek Vora of Revital highlighted the role of technology and innovation in streamlining production processes and ensuring cost-effectiveness.

Panelists agreed that regional collaboration is essential to create a unified market for locally manufactured health products, which would improve health security and drive economic growth and job creation.

The session concluded with a call to action for governments, development partners, and the private sector to prioritize policies and investments that support local manufacturing, ensuring that Africa is better prepared to respond to future health emergencies. The insights from this session underscored the transformative potential of regional manufacturing in building a more self-reliant and resilient health system for the continent.
